Spring Art Classes & Workshops

January 01, 2016

With Spring just around the corner, inspiration is everywhere, and the Alton Mill artists can barely wait to share their creativity with you! Take a look at the wide variety of interactive classes and workshops being offered, and see which ones spark your interest. Sign up for one, two, three or more classes… There’s no limit to your imagination!

If you love accessorizing your outfits with unique and exquisite jewellery, then Gallery Gemma’s ‘Make Your Own Bracelet’ workshop is just the thing for you! Learn the art and craft of chain maille by making a beautiful, sophisticated sterling silver bracelet in this half-day class! This workshop is offered twice: on Saturday April 9th or Saturday May 28th from 10:30am - 1:30pm. Cost to participate is $125/student and includes all sterling silver materials, instruction and use of tools.

Mill artist, CJ Shelton, is leading two sensational workshops in Studio 206 that will encourage your individual creativity, and leave you feeling relaxed and at ease. The first is called ‘Awakening the Dragon’ – A Create & Color Experiential Workshop. There are two opportunities to take this special spring workshop: Saturday April 2nd and Saturday April 30th from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Cost to participate is $45 per person. Over the course of the afternoon, you will learn about dragon energy, enjoy a beautiful guided journey to the land of the Druids, and create/colour your own dragon through the art of ‘zentangling’ or ‘zen-doodling’. This intuitive and calming art process is wonderfully relaxing and does not require any special art ability. If you can doodle, you can do it!

The second workshop being offered by CJ is ‘Art in the Round’ Intro to Mandala Making Workshop. This workshop takes place on Saturday May 7th from 1:00pm – 4:00pm and costs $70 per person (when two or more register). This special Mother's Day-themed session is a great Mum & Daughter day out (or mums and sons too!).  No artistic experience is necessary to enjoy the wonderful benefits of mandala making. The symbols, colours and patterns we choose when we make a mandala often reveal all kinds of interesting things about us. This is a fun and relaxing activity for all ages and abilities, the perfect Mother’s Day treat.

Signing up for workshops at the Hive encaustic studio (Studio 201) is ideal for art enthusiasts who enjoy creating with unconventional mediums and experimenting with different approaches to painting. Encaustic, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Throughout the months of April and May, the Hive will be offering a variety of one- or two-day workshops, half-day introduction workshops, and adult/child workshops.  No previous artistic experience is needed for any of the Encaustic 1 workshops.  Some experience is needed for the Encaustic 2, 3 & 4 workshops, and for Open Studios. The Hive is excited to introduce two new intriguing sessions to their schedule: Galileo, my hero! and Gravity: A Balanced Relationship (a one- and two-day workshop, respectively) with artist Christina Lovisa. Both workshops combine mixed media and encaustic techniques. For a list of all encaustic classes and workshops being offered in the Hive, click here

Ann Randeraad is known for her beautiful and rustic pottery. Ann offers fun, collaborative classes in studio 209 at the Alton Mill Arts Centre. Whether you are completely new to pottery or just sharpening up your skills, you are sure to walk out with a one-of-a-kind piece of art and a wonderful memory of your experience! Ann’s classes are offered throughout the week with afternoon and evening classes available. Class sizes are small, enabling participants to gain new skills rapidly. Classes are offered in 6-week sessions with a two-hour class each week. Most students will be able to complete 8 -10 pieces in this time. Cost to participate is $300 - clay, glazes, lessons and firings are included in the fee. Ann also offers: corporate team-building workshops, women's pottery parties and children's birthday parties.

Mark Grice offers a wide range of painting classes and workshops. Throughout the Spring, Mark will be holding Open Studio Paint Parties every Sunday afternoon where you can have a great time painting any image of your choice. You can also book a “Girls Night Out” painting party - get together a group of friends and select a picture for everyone to paint. Adult Art Classes with Mark are what everyone is talking about! No experience required. Just bring a photo of a landscape, portrait, wildlife, pet or anything you want to paint and Mark will help you accomplish your goal. Group Painting classes are also available and are a great way to introduce a gathering of people to a creative process. To register for your class or workshop, click here.
