Doors Open Headwaters 2014Visit Alton Mill during Doors Open weekend Aug 16 & 17

Doors Open gives Ontarians access to significant buildings across the region. Drop in, say hello, and take a tour to gain insight into the Alton Mill's fascinating history and current artistic and cultural life.

Originally a woollen mill (circa 1881), and later a rubber factory (circa 1935), the building has won numerous accolades, including Heritage Canada's National Achievement Award. It is a blend of rustic beauty and 21st century design, with large interior spaces and natural light, Douglas fir posts and beams, as well as a Turbine Room with much of the original machinery. It's brimming with art galleries and studios and creative talents who are ready to share their expertise.

Handouts for self-guided tours will be available all weekend from 10 am to 3 pm, with guided tours offered at 11:00, 12:30 and 2:00. Tours will focus on the architectural highlights of the building and its history. The guided tours will give a rare view of the normally inaccessible-to-the-public tower. Shaw’s Creek Cafe offers participants an opportunity to refuel with light fare and desserts. Handicap accessible (except upper part of tower and millrace).
